Wedding Dress Designer Explains the Difference Between Silk & Poly Fabric used on Couture Bridal Gowns

Most couture bridal dresses are made in what we call a man made fabric. Most of you would recognize that as simply being polyester fabric. But because poly fabric has such a bad connotation to it due to the fabrics of the 60's and 70's we try to make it sound better. But just keep in mind today's polyester fabrics are not your mothers poly fabrics.

Today it would be quite hard to tell polyester from silk simply by sight. The main way to tell the difference is by touch. So as you are shopping for designer bridal gowns make sure you touch the fabric. If the fabric feels very soft and luxurious then it is more likely to be made of a silk content. But if the wedding dress feels a bit stiff or hard then you can best believe it was made in a "man made" fabrication.

But is there any real advantage to buying a silk wedding gown vs a poly bridal dress? Really that just depends on the buyers personal preference. But what I can tell you, from designing for Darius Cordell Fashion Ltd for over a decade, is that if your bridal gown will be traveling then you may want to consider poly. The reason for that is polyester fabrics do not wrinkle as much. They are also a bit sturdier so they will travel much better. Silk fabrics will wrinkle quite easily and will require steaming after each sitting.

Another advantage to having considering polyester couture bridal gowns is that most of them can be easily cleaned. Some of the designer bridal dresses from the Darius Cordell couture collection that were made in a poly fabric have been washed in a washing machine more than once and come out looking brand new.

The one clear disadvantage to buying silk designer wedding dresses is the cost. Silk will most definitely cost you about 40% more than its man made counter part.

So as shop for your designer bridal dresses keep these facts in mind and it will allow you to make the best decision for your situation.
